Why I built PackSync

Hi, I'm koyott.
I'm a software developer by day and a hopeful game developer by night. I grew up in the Ultima era: huge worlds made of tiles and the feeling that a few hundred pixels could hold an entire adventure. Recently, Moonring, Elderlands and Skald reminded me how strong that feeling still is. They are what finally pushed me to start making my own games.
So I did what every hopeful indie dev does: I bought assets. A lot of assets. Tilesets, characters, icons, music... My itch.io library now holds more than 250 packs.
That's where things got messy. I'm working on several game projects at the same time, and I kept losing track:
- Which packs had I actually downloaded?
- Where did I extract that dungeon tileset again?
- Did the artist release an update with the new animations?
Clicking "Download" hundreds of times, unzipping everything by hand and checking every page for updates is not game development. So I wrote a small tool for myself.
PackSync connects to your itch.io account, downloads everything you own, extracts the archives (.zip, .rar, .7z) and files them as Creator / Pack name. It watches for new purchases and picks up updated files when creators publish new versions. My whole asset library now lives in one tidy folder, always up to date, and I can get back to what matters: making games.
It worked so well for me that I polished it into a real app, so you can use it too.
**What's in version 1.2**
- Download your whole itch.io library in one click
- Automatic extraction of .zip, .rar, .7z and .tar archives
- New purchases detected and downloaded automatically
- Updated files picked up when creators release new versions
- Choose your download folder, filter out demos and non-Windows builds
- English and French interface
- Lightweight Windows installer (2 MB)
**What's next**
I'd love to add automatic claiming of bundle items (those huge charity bundles!), a tray icon with notifications, and maybe Mac and Linux versions. Tell me in the comments what would help you most.
And yes, the games are coming too. I'll share my projects here in a future devlog.
Thanks for reading, and happy building!
